CHARLES MERCER
Having been a resident of Perry Township for over 40 years, my wife Ruth and I
have enjoyed many successes with the Perry Township Schools. We live in the
Edgewood area where we reared our five children who were very active in many
different school organizations. Thus, I have clocked in many hours attending
sporting events, proms, PTA meetings, dramas and musicals.
I have always kept abreast of what was going on in the educational community.
Until she retired, my wife taught in Perry’s system; our five children graduated
from the Perry Township schools; we have eight grandchildren who are now or will
be attending Perry’s schools, and we have family members who are teachers in
Perry schools. Therefore, I have a broad perspective of what goes on in the
important task of educating the children of our community.
Most of my career has been spent working within state government, both as an
administrative law judge for the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and as an
attorney for Sprint. The last 20 years of my career I spent working with the
Indiana General Assembly, mostly as an attorney for Sprint. During this time,
much of my activity centered on working with problems that appeared unsolvable;
however, I feel that I was a positive force in securing many amicable decisions.
Thus, I feel my good listening skills, open-mindedness, creative thinking, voice
of reason, and negotiating ability would serve the citizens of Perry Township
very well. I certainly believe in open communications with the public.
During the past year, actions taken by the current school board majority have
demonstrated a clear lack of concern for students, teachers, administration, and
community. Therefore, not only for myself, for my own family, but also for all
the families in our community, I feel some important changes need to be made
immediately. I am particularly interested in restoring principled leadership to
the MSDPT school board. The reputation and quality of our schools depend upon
this change. I am not presumptuous enough to think I have all the answers, but I
will listen to the community and, in turn, will keep the public informed. With
an open mind, I will research and study the issues in order to make judicious
decisions which so directly impact our children.
In short, I would like your support so that I can represent you as an MSDPT
school board member. My goal is to rebuild trust, restore pride, and represent
with integrity.
